Climate & Environmental Justice

We believe everyone should have access to healthy, green spaces and the opportunity to take positive action on climate change.

We prioritise communities most affected by climate-related harm. Many of our award-winning sites are located near high-rise towers and flats without gardens, where homes can become uncomfortably hot during increasingly warm summers. Green spaces such as Phoenix Farm provide a cooler, greener place for local residents to spend time outdoors and connect with nature.

Our programmes support people facing wider social and economic challenges. Through our growing spaces, we teach people how to grow food, share practical skills and enable volunteers to take home fresh produce, helping increase access to healthy food and build greater food resilience. Our Green Ambassadors programme gives key volunteers extra training on delivering environmental activities, offering opportunities to gain new skills, experience and knowledge, and empowering participants to turn ideas into action.

Our Winter Walks programme helps people stay connected during the colder months by encouraging residents to get outdoors, explore new places, build social connections and improve their physical and mental wellbeing. By providing shared walks, refreshments and lunch, we help reduce some of the pressures associated with the cost-of-living crisis.

We are committed to keeping our gardens and opportunities free of charge whenever possible, helping reduce unequal access to healthy environments. We actively welcome people on low incomes and those experiencing marginalisation, working with partners such as social housing providers and drug and alcohol support services to support participation through referrals.

Through volunteering, gardening and environmental education, we replace fear-based narratives around climate change with practical action, hope and empowerment, helping build stronger, more resilient communities.
