Who We Are
Hammersmith Community Gardens Association is a local environmental charity set up in 1984. Managed by a group of trustees, who are all local residents, the association currently employs a manager, garden manager and two school gardeners with a pool of sessional staff all of whom work to deliver environmental projects in Hammersmith.
The types of sessions we run include:
- Garden maintenance with volunteers
- Food growing and composting
- Wildlife gardening and medicinal herbs
- Family playschemes
- Gardening clubs in early years centres, primary and secondary schools
- Corporate volunteer days
Community gardens are small areas of public open space that are managed and cared for by local residents. Hammersmith Community Gardens Association manages two community gardens sites at Loris Road W6 and Godolphin Garden W12 and the glass houses in Ravenscourt Park.
Both the gardens were created from areas of derelict land, former bomb sites. As the gardens are local initiatives each one has a unique atmosphere. Our head quarters are the Eco Shed, a small sustainable structure in Loris Garden that was completed in 2005. This provides a base for our community gardener and volunteers. As well as creating space for people the sites have also been designed to encourage wildlife. The gardens are also used as an educational resource by local schools and in the holidays there are play schemes. Both sites are fully accessible.
We can also advise groups on how to make their grounds more environmentally friendly and sources of grants and other funding for environmental projects. It is our policy to follow the 3 ‘R’ Reduce, Reuse and Recycle The association is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. The association is funded by grants and fee based work.
There are opportunities for volunteers to help with the maintenance of the sites and learn new horticultural skills. Volunteers are both referred from other agencies and self referred. Sessions are held mid week and at weekends and in the evenings during the summer.

Hammersmith Community Gardens is a small and growing award winning environmental charity. We manage two small community gardens, Phoenix farm and a glasshouse project in Ravenscourt Park and run regular volunteer sessions for adults and families. We also work with many early years centres and schools across the borough providing support to staff and running gardening sessions and clubs. We have recently gained funding for several new projects and have regular enquiries from schools who would like us to run gardening groups for them. We are now looking to expand our pool of sessional staff so that we can take on additional new work quickly and so that we can provide cover for leave etc. We are therefore interested in hearing from people who are looking for regular part time work or occasional work.
We are looking for people who have:
- Good gardening or food growing skills and experience
- Good people skills
- The ability to work unsupervised
- The ability to plan and lead sessions
- Experience of working with volunteers or children
To apply please e mail your CV to info@hcga.org.uk Closing date for applications 9am 1st June 2010
